Altered Book Inspiration
Laurel recently had a new post about an altered book process she loves. I'm passing it along because I think it will help you in your artmaking journey.
Will Ashford has amazingly intriguing artwork. You can get lost in it for hours.

It's a great website with a new concept for an altered book/ journal page.
I challenge you to make your own!

Homework Tonight
Didn't his presentation make you want to attend KCAI?! I'm jealous!
Come to class Wednesday with 6 composition sketches for your self portrait. 4x6 pencil sketches of different compositions. Then we'll pick one and I'll have you break it up into three values to plan for your print.
We have another university coming to present tomorrow, so I'll grade those while the presentation's going on. They'll be ready for you to take home by the end of the period.
By Friday I want you to turn in your concept and plan for your outside (haunting piece). So that means a written idea of what your concept is and a sketch (or a few) in your sketchbook of what you plan to do.
(Oh I graded that homework. Sorry I forgot to pass them back. If you turned it in, you got a 100.)

Your next outside piece is to focus on the word "haunting" while using rhythm, contrast & emphasis.
This weekend you are to research the word "haunting" and make a list of all the possible conceptual definitions. It's due Monday.

Sunday Sunday Sunday!
Sunday is NATIONAL PORTFOLIO DAY (for Dallas anyway).
This is an email I received that I thought was more appropriate for you, so I'm passing along the info.
YOU SHOULD GO! YES, I'M YELLING BECAUSE IT'S A GREAT OPPORTUNITY TO GET FEED BACK FROM SOMEONE OTHER THAN ME. Take your journals and your other larger pieces and see what they say about your work.
Here's the letter I got:
As an admissions counselor at Kansas City Art Institute, I would like to invite you to attend the upcoming National Portfolio Day in Dallas on Sunday, October 3rd, 2010. I, along with two other KCAI representatives, will be in Dallas, and we would be happy to have the opportunity to review your portfolio, hear your ideas, and give you feedback about your work. We can also provide you with information about the college application process.
The event will be hosted by School of Visual Arts at the Hilton Anatole and will be held Sunday, October 3rd from 12 PM to 4 PM. The location is Hilton Anatole, 2201 Stemmons Freeway, Dallas, TX 75207.
For additional information about the National Portfolio Day, please go to http://kcai.askadmissions.net/admin/Communications/ClickThru.aspx?qs=jnt2eRJ6yE3T9X8ZZUq0pqrp%2bsVuam0xQ2FDpKRjwzATuO835mapOkZ83gd%2bWAB%2bEuhrq4x0hTnYgUOvtPaMjg%3d%3d. Joseph Cornell
Joseph Cornell has a great website about identity boxes he creates. Aside from getting inspiration from him, he also has downloadable resources for you to print to use in collages! We should thank him for being so generous!
His website is now under the Helpful Resources link.

National Portfolio Day
National Portfolio Day is fast approaching! It's a great opportunity to take you portfolio of all your work (including journals/sketchbooks) and have tons of the art schools critique your work. It often provides valuable information for those students who take advantage of it.
How it works: You take yourself and a buddy (or you and your journal + supplies) and your artwork and wait in lines to speak to the schools of your choice. They are all set up at tables in a large conference room and you pick and choose which school you want to speak to. It's a great opportunity to have them put a face with a name if it's somewhere you KNOW you want to apply to. Plus you can get a better idea of the kinds of works they want to see when you apply...every school is different. You can also see work that other students your age are doing and get ideas and inspiration from them. So please take advantage of this opportunity!
PS...(Take a snack, a bottle of water, and a bunch of patience!)
